The Complete Guide to Topsoil: Depth, Quantity, Turf and Plants

If you’re getting ready to lay turf, sow some grass seed, or build a new planting bed, one of the first questions that comes up is: “How much topsoil do I need?” It sounds straightforward, but it’s one of those things that can easily trip you up. Order too little and you’ll run out halfway through. Order too much and you’ve wasted money, and probably ended up with a big heap of soil left over. Working it out properly before you start can save a lot of hassle.

Why Topsoil Matters

Topsoil is more important than people often realise. It’s the layer that holds all the nutrients, organic matter, and structure that plants rely on. Without enough of it, grass won’t root properly, turf will struggle to establish, and flowers or shrubs won’t grow as strongly as they should. Think of it like the base of a cake or the foundation of a house – if that bit isn’t right, whatever sits on top isn’t going to last. That’s why getting the right amount and the right depth of topsoil makes such a big difference to the end result.

How Deep Should Topsoil Be?

This is where most people get confused. The truth is, there’s no “one size fits all” answer. It depends on what you’re planting.

Here’s a handy guide you can stick to:

  • Laying turf or starting a lawn – 10–15 cm usually does the trick.
  • Sowing grass seed – Slightly less, about 8–10 cm, is fine.
  • Flower beds and borders – Aim for 20–30 cm so roots have space to spread.
  • Veg beds – 30 cm or more if you’re going for carrots, spuds, or anything root-heavy.
  • Shrubs or small plants – About 15–20 cm works nicely.

So, when people ask, “Topsoil — how deep should it be?” … the answer is: it depends on what you’re growing.

How to Work Out the Amount

Once you know how deep you want the soil, the maths is really simple. Just take the size of the area and multiply it by the depth. That’s it.

So, say your lawn is about 50 square metres and you’re adding a 10 cm layer (which is 0.1 m). Do the quick sum:

50 × 0.1 = 5 cubic metres of soil.

Or if you’ve got a smaller flower bed, maybe 10 square metres, and you want 20 cm (0.2 m) of soil:

10 × 0.2 = 2 cubic metres.

One thing to keep in mind: soil always settles once it’s spread out and watered. It compacts down a bit, so it’s a good idea to order an extra 5–10%. Better to have a bit left over than come up short right at the end.

Topsoil for Lawns, Grass & Turf

Whether you’re sowing grass seed or laying turf, good quality topsoil is what makes the difference between a patchy lawn and a lush one. Grass seed needs a fine soil for the seeds to settle into, turf needs a nutrient-rich base to root quickly, and even existing lawns benefit from a layer of topsoil when you’re filling in patches. A good screened topsoil works well for all three, so you don’t need to overcomplicate the choice.

Topsoil or Compost?

A question that pops up a lot is whether to use topsoil or compost. The short answer is: they do different jobs. Topsoil gives you the bulk and the structure, while compost boosts nutrients and improves the condition of the soil. In most cases, you’ll get the best results using both together. Topsoil gives you the depth, and compost makes it rich and fertile.

Can Topsoil Be Used for Planting?

Yes – in fact, it’s often the best starting point for beds, borders, and containers. Just remember that plants need more than structure; they need feeding, too. Mixing in compost or fertiliser with your topsoil will help plants thrive rather than just survive.

Quick Recap

  • How much topsoil do I need? Measure your space, choose your depth, and calculate the volume.
  • How deep should it be? 10–15 cm for turf, 20–30 cm for beds, and 30+ cm for veg.
  • Topsoil or compost? Both are best – topsoil for the base, compost for nutrients.
  • Can you plant straight into topsoil? Yes, though enriching it will give better results.
